Just like that we are in August and the Yellowstone River is really starting to feel like itself again. As rocky of a runoff season as we had, we have been on the river for the last few weeks and are seeing some great fishing. Following the wet, cool spring, July was hot and dry as is typical. August often starts out right where July left off, but we are hoping to see a bit of rain in the forecast this month. The river is currently flowing at 3800cfs at Corwin Springs and 3900 in Livingston. Both are slightly below […]
Read MoreGreen is good! Green means GO… Boats are back on the Yellowstone, it’s finally summertime! Flow levels have been in the “good” range for well over a week, but until the past day or so, the clarity has been leaving quite a bit to be desired. Sunday we started to see a change. No longer brown. Green was showing. With all the work that FWP, the Forest Service and others have been doing, we are all very thankful that access sites are open and allowing anglers and recreationalists get out there and check things out. More ramps are re-opening and […]
Read MoreHappy 4th of July Weekend! One might typically expect that this would be the kickoff week for fishing on the Yellowstone. Salmonflies, river levels below 10,000 cfs and the “Good green” water clarity. Two out of three should be good, right? We’re just over 10k in flows. And there are reports of a few Salmonflies in the valley. But the river clarity still leaves a lot to be desired. Still brown. The wait continues. The river definitely has the last word! This is the longest free flowing river left in the Western United States. And when the […]
Read MoreIt has been great to extend our fishable territory with the 2022 opening of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) over the Memorial Day weekend. YNP presents an extension of rivers, streams and creeks to our network of waters to get out and fish throughout the summer season. There is so much accessible water in the park and we are fortunate to be able to offer guided trips to and get out and fish when we can. Early season tends to focus most of the fishing on the western portion of YNP. Primarily on the Firehole, Upper Madison and Gibbon Rivers. The […]
Read MoreThe Yo-Yo-stone is doing its thing rising and dropping as our spring brings us both warm and cold weather. We likely won’t get back on the river, but we still haven’t found the crystal ball that will let us know when the river will be back in that sweet spot to start fishing post runoff. It might be by the last week of June. We will have to wait and see. Last week, we experienced higher daytime air temperatures as well as steady rain that bumped up many of the tributaries in Yellowstone National Park and into Paradise Valley. We […]
Read MoreYellowstone River Fishing Report – May 17, 2022 And so it begins. The river has spiked in the last few days and we are currently experiencing a window of dirty water. Looking at the charts, we have made significant daily spikes across the Upper Yellowstone watershed. We are beginning to experience the start of the runoff season. Warmer day temperatures are melting snow at lower elevations. On the other hand, it is great to see the current snowpack stats! The Upper Yellowstone watershed can still use all it can get but we are excited to see it at 104% for […]
Read MoreYellowstone River Update: Recent weather events have bumped up the flows on upper tributaries to the Yellowstone River and has dirtied up the river. The Yellowstone is currently flowing at 4420 cfs at Corwin Springs and 3429 cfs in Livingston. Despite how it has been the last week, the river has turned from an off green color to brown. The river has bumped up nearly 3000 cfs over the last few days and should continue to go up in the next few days. On the bright side, more rain/snow means more water later in the season! We are really […]
Read MoreLooking like fairly typical early April spring weather on tap for the week ahead. Daytime highs in the upper 40s to low 50s every couple of days interrupted with chances of showers and some snow flurries mixed in. Those cloudier days should herald the beginnings of the spring blue winged olive hatch along with the continuance of midges. Trout have been active and fishing has been good! We did go through an unusually warm spell a little bit ago and the river has bumped up a bit from the low flows we saw most of the winter. […]
Read MoreIt’s been quite some time since we last posted anything for a fishing report. Apologies! It’s been a heck of a year…. There’s not a whole lot that is going on as far as reliable fishing these past handful of weeks. The entire river is frozen bank to bank in much of the valley. Especially above Pine Creek and lasting up to Mill Creek. Above Mill Creek there is a small open water channel in the faster areas but extensive shelf ice extends considerably on each side. Below the mouth of Depuy’s, there is a bit more open water but […]
Read MoreFather’s Day weekend and we’re floating the Yellowstone? Rare! The fact that it’s damn near perfectly clear hovering around 7k flows is almost unheard of. This is much more typical early July water levels. With runoff seemingly in the rearview mirror, it’s time to get out there and enjoy the good fishing we are having! There are not the big salmonflies in Paradise Valley or the upper river just yet. Those are still a week plus away from popping. But we are seeing really good caddis as well as PMD hatches starting to get fish looking up. I think with […]
